Australian Premier Calls for Smoke Ban

10 September 2004

QUEENSLAND, Australia – As reported by the Australian Associated Press: "Premier Peter Beattie called today for a national ban on smoking in casino high-roller rooms.

"Last week, the premier announced Australia's strictest smoking laws, with bans to apply at patrolled beaches, children's playgrounds, sports venues and building entrances from January 1 next year.

"Bans in pubs, clubs and outdoor eateries will also be phased in over a two-year period.

"But controversially, the ban did not apply to high-rollers at Queensland's casinos.

"Mr Beattie said he would have preferred a total ban but feared big spending international gamblers would go interstate.

"…Mr Beattie denied the Governments' decision not to place the bans on high rollers was motivated by potential tax losses…"
