Australian Gamblers Lose $15.3 Billion

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Australian: "Punters lost a national total of more than $15.3 billion last financial year, sparking a call yesterday for a summit on problem gambling.

"…We lost more than $15.3 billion (US$11 million) - an average of $1026 per adult - or about 3.4 per cent of the average household disposable income.

"This was only a slight increase on the previous year - when gambling turnover totalled about $125 billion and losses about $15 billion.

"South Australian Independent No Pokies MP Nick Xenophon said it was still not good enough.

"…Calling for a national summit on gambling losses, Mr Xenophon said states and territories needed to be weaned off their 'jackpot junkies' funding formula…"
