Australian Club Could Lose License29 November 2004AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Australian Associated Press: "A Sydney club could be stripped of its poker machine licence and fined up to $300,000 if found to have breached anti-gambling laws. "The Moorebank Sports Club is being investigated by the Department of Gaming and Racing following reports it instructed staff to encourage customers to play the pokies. "NSW Gaming Minister Grant McBride said today the club told staff not to issue $2 coins to patrons because they didn't fit into poker machines. Mr McBride described any such practice as "outrageous". "…'This is totally in opposition to the ethos of clubs,' he told reporters "…'If they're in breach of the legislation, they could incur fines of up to $300,000 as a result of this.' "…Mr McBride said it was possible the club could lose its poker machine licence but individual staff would probably not be fined. "He said he hoped there were no other incidences of clubs instructing staff to encourage club members to play the pokies…" |
