Australian city loses gaming machines

13 October 2006

WARRNAMBOOL, Australia – As reported by the Warrnambool Standard: "Gaming machines in Warrnambool are set to be cut by 13 under a government plan to tackle problem gambling.

"However, the city's total number of pokies per capita remains above the state average.

"The reduction follows a government promise more than three years ago to take action and comes after gamblers pumped a total of $60 million-plus into the city's machines.

"The policy announced yesterday includes new planning provisions for the placement of machines and long-term measures - to be introduced by 2010 - to halve the maximum machine bet from $10 to $5 and remove ATMs from gaming venues…"
