Australian Bookies Gutted After Betting Splurge

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald: "The biggest betting plunge in recent memory ensured bookmakers at Randwick were 'stripped out' of more than $3 million by Makybe Diva's Melbourne Cup romp yesterday.

"Makybe Diva's win as a $3.60 favourite, after firming from $4.20, prompted a clerk of Luke Behrmann, a leading interstate fielder at Randwick, to declare: 'Don't even ask, we did our arse.'

"Leading up to the race, Behrmann took three bets in as many minutes on Makybe Diva that took out more than $250,000 alone.

"…Big-betting bookie Con Kafataris described the result as 'an absolute blackout - she was by far the best-backed runner I can recall in a Melbourne Cup'.

"'I was at my maximum limit with her,' said Kafataris, who turned down more than $800,000 in bets for Makybe Diva and faced a payout of $1.5m.

"…Harry Barrett said Makybe Diva's win was 'an absolute shocker for me', adding: 'It took out half a million. And Vinnie Roe wouldn't have been much better. I took a bet of $50,000 on it at $6.'…"
