Australian Betting Agency Plans in Doubt

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald: "ACT online and telephone sports betting operator SportOdds Systems' plans to promote itself as the official betting agency for the Rugby World Cup in NSW - and take advantage of the biggest betting market in Australia - have been thrown into doubt after the Federal Court refused to overturn a crucial piece of legislation.

"However, SportOdds has been given the green light to apply for a licence to operate in NSW after the Federal Court said that legislation preventing out-of-state corporate bookmakers from obtaining a licence to take bets in NSW was invalid.

"…SportOdds, which holds a bookmaking licence in the ACT and Western Australia, was appointed the official betting agency for the Rugby World Cup in August. Under the terms of its contract, SportOdds is entitled to `advertise and promote its relationship with the Rugby World Cup throughout Australia'.

"However, if SportOdds' application for an operating licence was rejected, it might not be able to advertise its link with the Rugby World Cup in newspapers, on television or at grounds…"
