Australia reviews online gambling legislation

19 January 2003

At present, it is illegal to provide or advertise online gaming services such as casinos in Australia. As part of a statutory requirement of the Interactive Gambling Act (2001), the Department for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts under the auspices of the Federal Government is to review current gambling legislation. The review will look at activities that are excluded from the Act, including telephone betting, lotteries, and bets on horse racing. Other issues on the agenda include technology and the legal implications of enforcing financial agreements between players and Internet gambling sites.
