Australia: Pokies revenue drops after smoking bans10 December 2008NEW SOUTH WALES, Australia -- As reported by the Australian Associated Press: "A NSW ban on indoor smoking has cost clubs about $900 million, caused the loss of 2,100 jobs and almost $9 million in donations to charities and other bodies, figures from the state government show. "Clubs and pubs were losing almost $1.7 million a day in poker machine revenue since indoor smoking was banned in July last year, Fairfax newspapers report. "According to the figures from the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing, poker machine revenue plummeted by about $900 million last financial year, with jobs and charitable donations the casualties of the shortfall..." |
