Australia: Pokies clampdown will hit jobs, warn venues

4 January 2010

NEW SOUTH WALES, Australia -- Layoffs will be inevitable if the federal government imposes recommended new controls on gambling, NSW clubs and hotels warned, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The recommendations include stricter controls on gambling at clubs and hotels, while facilitating new opportunities to gamble online, according to the report.

The clubs and hotels are particularly aghast at new proposed betting limits.

The clubs and hotels say the proposed controls would reduce revenue 30 per cent, and force 190 of them to close, the Sydney Morning Herald said.

The State Government also criticized the recommendations in the Sydney Morning Herald report.
