Australia: MP Wilkie proposes scheme for pokie reform

6 May 2011

AUSTRALIA -- Independent Tasmanian MP Andrew Wilkie has proposed a scheme to implement gambling reform, that has been criticized as a "political fix", according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Under Wilkie's scheme, small clubs will have four years along with financial resources to bring in pokie reform, the report explained.

Also clubs with less than 15 pokie machines would be exempt from dealing with the new regulations until 2018, the Sydney Morning Herald said.

Dissenting MPs said the scheme would not deal with problem gambling and would see the loss of thousands of jobs, the report noted.
