Australia: Independent Senator refutes need to compensate pokie clubs

17 October 2011

AUSTRALIA -- In the ongoing political tussle over pokie reform in Australia, Independent Senator Nick Xenophon has refuted the need for pokie clubs to receive compensation, ABC Newcastle reported.

Xenophon, who supports limiting pokie machine numbers and introducing mandatory pre-commitment technology, compared compensating pokie clubs for loss of revenue to compensating bars and hotels for the smoking ban, the report said.

Opposition to pokie reform is strong within the gambling industry, but the government only has until May to implement changes or risk losing the needed support of Independent MPs which could result in an election, ABC Newcastle reported.
