Australia: Independent MP withdraws support for government

23 January 2012

AUSTRALIA -- Andrew Wilkie has withdrawn his support for Julia Gillard's minority government over lack of progress on pokie reform, The Herald Sun reported.

Wilkie was unhappy that Gillard did not honour their agreement on pokie reform that would have included mandatory pre-commitment levels and $1 bet limits, the report said.

Gillard went for a compromise and offered only a "limited trial" of mandatory pre-commitment levels on pokie machines, following uproar from the gaming industry over potential job losses, The Herald-Sun reported.

Gillard's government is now vulnerable to an election if there's a "no-confidence vote", the report noted.
