Australia: Gamblers blind to downturn27 July 2009AUSTRALIA -- As reported by The Border Mail: "The global economic downturn has not stopped gamblers pouring money into poker machines. "New figures show an extra $1 million was spent across Wodonga, Wangaratta and Benalla in the past financial year. "Data released yesterday by the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation shows $289,397 more was ploughed into poker machines in Wodonga in 2008-09, $547,740 in Wangaratta and $200,191 in Benalla. "The peak month for spending in Wodonga was December with $865,233 put through the city's 184 machines in that time. "February had the smallest monthly figure of $615,552..." |
