Australia: Casino renews call for pokies

CANBERRA, Australia -- Casino Canberra has again called for 200 poker machines, saying business opportunities are being lost, the Canberra Times reported.

The casino opened 20 years ago with a proviso that it have no poker machines, but Casino Canberra's marketing director described the proviso as "redundant", the Canberra Times said.

Casino Canberra has requested it be allowed to utilize surplus machine licenses held by the government, but the Gaming and Racing Minister says he wants to take those licenses out of circulation to address problem gambling issues, the report noted.
