Australia: Call to lift veil on pokies earnings20 August 2008AUSTRALIA -- As reported by The Age: "Gaming machine revenue from each Victorian venue must be released to ensure fair competition in the State Government's bidding process for new licences, local government bodies have warned. "In separate submissions to the Government's Gambling Licences Review, the Municipal Association of Victoria and the Local Government Working Group On Gambling have urged for greater disclosure of gambling losses and broader social criteria for the bidding process. "The Government is moving to overhaul the gaming industry to allow clubs and hotels to own and operate their own poker machines from 2012, ending the Tabcorp-Tatts Group duopoly. "...The local government working group ...says it is 'deeply concerned' with the lack of available information on poker machine returns by venue. "...VCGR executive commissioner Peter Cohen said data on poker machine losses at gaming venues could not be released as legislation did not allow it..." |
