25 October 2004

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Age: "The federal government has asked banks to consider placing restrictions on automatic teller machines (ATMs) at gaming venues in a bid to help problem gamblers.

"Federal Family and Community Services Minister Kay Patterson said she had met with the Australian Bankers Association (ABA) and suggested options such as blocking withdrawals for problem gamblers from ATMs in gaming venues and warnings on ATM screens, Melbourne's Sunday Age newspaper reported.

"…Senator Patterson said tackling problem gambling was a priority for the Howard government's fourth term, but said it was crucial to have "evidence-based solutions".

"…ABA chief executive David Bell said more work was needed to prove a link between problem gambling and ATMs before new options were tried…."
