Audit: Louisiana Casino Funds Misused27 January 2004OAKDALE, Louisiana – As reported by the American Press: "The city may have violated its compact with the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana by failing to use gaming funds properly. "An audit, performed by Darnell, Sikes and Frederick of Eunice, found certain instances where expenditures were charged to the gaming fund that may not be in line with what the compact spells out. "…The city has received more than $2 million from the tribe since 1996. "A contract signed in 2001 sets forth how gaming revenues are to be used by municipalities and other governmental entities. Oakdale is to use the money for fire protection for the casino, police services, and municipal infrastructure and housing. "The audit notes that town officials have been made aware of what is the proper use of the gaming revenues and will continue to monitor the use of the money. "…The 82-page audit also found that the balanced budget act was violated. "…The audit also reported problems with the signing of checks in various federal programs. "…Auditors also found that several accounting errors were made and not corrected prior to the year's end, forcing the adjustment of numerous entries…" |
