Attorneys Push for Passenger Fee20 September 2006FLORIDA – As reported by the Sun News: "Attorneys for the casino boat industry said Tuesday that Horry County could avoid a losing court battle if it accepts a passenger fee instead of taxing the industry's proceeds. "County Council pushed ahead anyway with the tax on gambling boat profits and pay-outs but agreed to negotiate with casino operators once again. "…Florida-based SunCruz Casinos, which owns one of the boats, sued the state over the new law, saying tax collectors could not touch gambling proceeds generated outside South Carolina waters. The case appears headed for the state Supreme Court. "SunCruz offered the county $3 for each of the estimated 25,000 passenger who board the ship each month if it agrees to drop its effort to tax the casino boats' proceeds…" |
