Atlantic City Workers Vote to Strike10 September 2004ATLANTIC CITY – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "The drumbeat grew steadily louder Thursday as union members gave their permission for a strike against the casino industry and started gearing up for what could be a lengthy fight. "Members of Local 54 of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union on Thursday overwhelmingly approved a strike, voting 8,020 to 108 to let the union order a work action if talks break down. "Local 54's contract with all of the city's casinos except Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa expires midnight Wednesday. "…'I saw their offer. It was ridiculous, a joke,' said Yonnie Spriggs, a contract committee member and Atlantic City Hilton Casino Resort employee. "…The mood inside the Atlantic City Convention Center on Thursday night was oddly celebratory as about 5,000 union workers filed in for the second of two voting sessions. Several thousand cast their votes during a morning session. "…The battle between the union and the casinos this time is hinges on four main points: subcontracting, successorship, benefits and length of contract. "…Despite the festive atmosphere, workers realize the gravity of walking off their jobs…" |
