Atlantic City Workers Still on the Job

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Eleven of the city's casinos are now operating without a contract, but the 14,500 hotel and restaurant employees involved remain on the job.

"The 11:59 p.m. deadline passed Tuesday without word of a deal, but union leaders said no work action would be taken before the weekend.

"Local 54 of Unite Here - which had been known as the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union until a recent merger with the Union of Needletrades and Industrial Textile Employees - has been threatening to walk out if demands on four key issues are not met.

"… Local 54 President Robert McDevitt said that, while no extension agreements were signed, union members would continue working as a gesture of good faith.

"The absence of any work action today suggests that even as the strike chatter heated up during the past few days, talks with the casinos never regressed…"
