Atlantic City Workers Accept Contract Offer

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "The casino-union contract proposal cleared its final hurdle Wednesday with members of Local 54 of Unite Here overwhelmingly supporting the deal.

"The first shifts of strikers will report to work this morning. Others will return to work based on their prestrike schedules.

"The five-year agreement, reached late Monday night, was approved by 95.7 percent of the voters.

"Nearly 6,000 employees from Harrah's Atlantic City, Showboat Casino Hotel, Atlantic City Hilton Casino Resort, Caesars Atlantic City, Tropicana Casino and Resort, Bally's Atlantic City and Resorts Atlantic City cast their votes, ratifying the contract. Fewer than 300 people voted against the deal to put 10,000 hotel and restaurant service workers back to work at seven casinos.

"…In the end, both sides conceded: The casinos loosened their purse strings and offered a generous line of economic increases; the union backed off its demand for a three-year contract term…"
