Atlantic City Residents Kept Awake by Picketers

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Ellen Carpenter wants to be on the strikers' side, but it's too much.

"'This is ridiculous. I cannot sleep,' Carpenter said Tuesday, holding open her storm door at a little past noon.

"…She handled security last night from 12 to 8 a.m. at the Best of Life senior complex. Now it's well past noon and she can't sleep.

"As the casino worker strike by Local 54 of Unite HERE approaches three weeks, some of the people who work the odd shifts that keep Atlantic City running 24 hours a day are getting tired. Literally.

"The people who live in the Beachgate Condominium complex at the intersection of New Jersey and Pacific avenues live directly across the street from the bare open land used by organizing protesters.

"In theory, many of the residents at the complex said they agree with what the union is trying to achieve.

"But in practice, they said they need to get their sleep during the day, right when the demonstrators are making their point the loudest.

"…Everyone agreed that the worst came Saturday, when the protest included a concert by musician Wyclef Jean.

"…The Atlantic City police have responded to a number of noise complaints during the strike, said police spokesman Lt. Michael Tullio…"
