Atlantic City Race Course wants $2.5 million

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, New Jersey -- As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Atlantic City Race Course operators say they need $2.5 million out of a $90 million pot financed by casino funds to bolster their horse racing purses in 2009 and 2010, or the course could close.

"The New Jersey Racing Commission is mandating the course hold a 20-day racing schedule next year, but course operators say they 'will not have sufficient purse dollars to run that many days' without the extra money.

"'While we clearly recognize the need for all New Jersey tracks to supplement purses, (Atlantic City Race Course) is the only track that will have to close without a supplement,' race course President Maureen G. Bugdon said in a letter sent earlier this month to New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority President Dennis Robinson.

"Atlantic City casinos are paying the $90 million over a three-year period to keep video lottery terminals out of New Jersey's horse racing tracks by funding bigger purses at Monmouth Park, Meadowlands and Freehold Raceway. The previous casino-funded pot totaled $86 million over a four-year period. Atlantic City Race Course didn't participate in the previous agreement..."
