Atlantic City Casinos Delay Slots for Tracks

OCEANPORT, New Jersey – As reported by the Asbury Park Press: "Bidders on a proposed lease of Monmouth Park face likely delays in installing slot machines, due to resistance from Atlantic City casinos, said the head of the state agency that operates the track.

"But George Zoffinger, president of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, said interest remains high among potential track operators, and a lease could have built-in amendments that would be triggered if additional gambling options were permitted.

"…Zoffinger said he and other state officials have been meeting with casino representatives, who are considering paying subsidies toward racetrack purses in exchange for a delay on pursuing slot machines or video lottery terminals at the tracks.

"…The casinos have the backing of Gov. McGreevey, who feels the Atlantic City gaming companies need to be protected from additional competition within the state, said Micah Rasmussen, a McGreevey spokesman…"
