Atlantic City Casino Vendors Fill GOP Coffers

NEW JERSEY – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "The June primaries were two weeks away, and some prominent Senate Republicans were fighting for political survival.

"At the same time, the Atlantic City gaming industry was in the middle of its own fight, six weeks away from the deadline for a state budget that included a $135 million casino-tax hike.

"That's when the money started to come in.

"On May 14, five casino vendors contributed $65,000 to state Senate Republicans. The largest contribution, $25,000, came from Sheldon Gordon, president of Gordon Group Holdings. The company is financing and developing the Pier at Caesars project, formerly known as the Shops on Ocean One, a project that received $33 million from the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority.

"…The Casino Control Act prohibits casino license holders from directly or indirectly contributing to political campaigns. Casino Control Commission Executive Director Linda Kassekert sent a letter to casino officials in July reminding them of the law.

"Companies that do business with casinos, however, face no such restrictions…"
