Atlantic City Casino Union to Rally16 September 2004ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Thousands of union protesters are expected to rally on the Boardwalk today in a show of solidarity designed to pressure the casinos to settle on a new contract. "Members of Local 54 of UNITE HERE will march toward each other from opposite ends of the Boardwalk beginning at 5 p.m. One group will start at Albany Avenue and the other at New Jersey Avenue, eventually coming together in front of Boardwalk Hall for a mass rally. "Local 54 President Robert McDevitt estimated the protest will attract as many as 10,000 marchers, including support from construction trades across the Northeast. "…Local 54, the city's largest and most powerful labor union, is in the midst of bitter contract negotiations that could erupt into a strike as early as this weekend. Union members have stayed on the job since their five-year contract expired midnight Tuesday, but McDevitt said a walkout remains a possibility if the casinos fail to meet Local 54's demands. "…A strike could affect as many as 11 of the city's 12 casinos. The only casino that would definitely be immune to a walkout is the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, which struck its own four-year deal with Local 54 after it opened in 2003…" |
