Atlantic City casino numbers up

11 June 2008

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey -- As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "...With this May delivering one extra Friday and Saturday compared with 2007, the casino industry enjoyed higher monthly revenue for only the second time this year.

"Gaming revenue inched up 1.6 percent to $415.3 million thanks to the two extra weekend days and a sunny Memorial Day weekend that drew big crowds to Atlantic City for the unofficial start of the summer tourism season.

"...Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort was the biggest gainer in May among the city's 11 casinos, scoring an 11.4 percent increase in revenue. Borgata, as usual, was the overall revenue leader, pulling in $64.2 million from its slot machines and table games, a 4.9 percent increase over last year.

"...May's higher revenue was a rare bit of good news for an industry hurt by the sluggish economy, extra competition from Pennsylvania's slot parlors and surging gas prices.

"...Casino executives are hopeful the weak economy, high airline fares and the expense of far-flung trips will persuade tourists from New Jersey and surrounding states to choose Atlantic City for vacations this summer..."
