Atlantic City Casino Employees Return to Work

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "…Their uniforms crisply pressed and nameplates polished to a high-gloss shine, members of Local 54 of Unite Here returned to work Thursday for the first time since walking off the job Oct. 1 in a contract dispute with seven casinos.

"Union members were finally able to go back to work after giving overwhelming approval Wednesday to a new five-year deal with Bally's, Caesars Atlantic City, the Atlantic City Hilton Casino Resort, Harrah's Atlantic City, the Showboat Casino Hotel, Resorts Atlantic City and Tropicana Casino and Resort.

"Gaming halls had temporarily reassigned managers and other nonunion workers to clean rooms, serve drinks and perform other Local 54 jobs during what was Atlantic City's longest casino strike. But Thursday, things returned to normal.

"…Horror stories abounded about Local 54 members falling behind in their bills and being forced to take a second job to make ends meet while the union and the casinos remained deadlocked during four agonizing weeks of on-again, off-again negotiations.

"…Workers said they were graciously welcomed back by management. Gamblers also were happy to see union members back on the job.

"…Voicing sympathy for union members, some casino patrons said they delayed taking trips to Atlantic City because they didn't want to cross picket lines…"
