Atlanta casino getting some support

ATLANTA, Georgia -- As reported by the Atlanta Journal Constitution: "An Atlanta City Council committee expressed support Tuesday for an ambitious plan to put video lottery terminals at Underground Atlanta, which developers say could bring in nearly $350 million a year.

"But council members said they wanted to make sure the proposal will benefit the city — by getting involved in negotiations before any deal is struck.

"...During their presentation, the supporters argued their plan will help the financially struggling city government rake in millions of dollars a year. They also said Mayor Shirley Franklin has written them that she supports the concept and will work 'to make the proposal a success.'

"The Underground Atlanta leaseholders' plan, released last month, calls for a $450 million video lottery casino and 29-story hotel. It needs approval from the Georgia Lottery Board, which has no immediate plans to vote on the idea, a lottery spokeswoman said Tuesday..."
