17 August 2000

WASHINGTON – Aug. 17, 2000 – As reported by The Associated Press: “A leading Washington art museum is taking a pioneering plunge in Las Vegas to raise cash and make more people acquainted with great paintings and sculptures.

”The museum hopes to raise $1 million or more with the six-month show that opens Sept. 1.

”Las Vegas is already known for large-scale reproductions of the Empire State Building and Egyptian pyramids, as well as card tables and slot machines. But fine art?

”…Jay Gates, director of the Phillips, said the idea was to bring new, diverse groups of people to art.

”…The Bellagio will charge out-of-state visitors $12 admission to the show -- $2 off for Nevadans.

”…The Guggenheim Museum in New York is reportedly planning to send a popular show called "The Art of the Motorcycle" to a new building that will be put up next to the parking garage of the Venetian Hotel…”
