Arkansas County to Decide on Casino

21 September 2004

ARKANSAS – As reported by the Tennessee Commercial-Appeal: "The Crittenden County Quorum Court is expected to decide today whether to endorse casino development in the county.

"An endorsement would give The Callaway Group Inc. of Memphis permission to lobby the legislature for a statewide referendum for casino development in Crittenden County.

"Casino development requires statewide approval of a constitutional amendment. Arkansas voters rejected casino gambling referendums in 1996 and 2000.

"…Meantime, opponents have been organizing. At a hearing in August, about 100 county residents filled the courthouse waving black and white fliers that stated "NO CASINO in Crittenden County."

"Some opponents have formed Citizens Against Gambling, which is urging citizens to pressure their respective court members to reject the endorsement…"
