Arkansas Committee Clash Over Casino Proposal

ARKANSAS – As reported by the Pueblo Chieftain: "Board members of the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo's governing authority have differing feelings about a casino proposed for land next to the riverwalk project.

"Members of the authority board and the riverwalk's nonprofit foundation heard a presentation on the casino project Monday from the project's developer, Steve Hillard of Council Tree Communications.

"The foundation board will vote via e-mail in the next few days on a resolution supporting the project, according to Ralph Williams, the board's chairman.

"…HARP Authority Chairman Gus Sandstrom said 'I'm closer and closer to being really against this.'

"…Board member Alan Hamel said he hasn't made a decision yet, but he feels better about the project after Monday's presentation by casino backers. He said he liked the idea that the casino will be an understated part of the 5-acre complex.

"…HARP board member Matt Peulen, who also is a county commissioner, said he's leaning in favor of the casino, although there are still a lot of questions…"
