Arkansas casino backer won't give up

18 July 2007

FORT SMITH, Arkansas -- As reported by the Fort Smith Morning News: "Bennie Westphal said he still supports the idea of a proposed riverfront casino in Fort Smith despite it being opposed by the regional office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

"'It's disappointing, but I'm not discouraged,' he said. 'We'll keep working. It's a good thing for the riverfront. All I know is to keep doing what we're doing.'

"The regional director of the Eastern Oklahoma office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Jeanette Hanna, on July 11 issued a recommendation to deny the United Keetoowah Band's application to place riverfront land in Fort Smith into trust for purposes of casino gaming.

"...Westphal won't give up hope for a casino there after that deadline passes though..."
