Arizona tribes oppose new casino

16 March 2009

GLENDALE, Arizona -- As reported by The Arizona Republic: "More tribes are speaking out against a proposed casino near Glendale's sports and entertainment district.

"The Tohono O'odham Nation has proposed a 600-room resort and casino be built on land it owns near 91st and Northern avenues. In January, the tribe applied for the government to take the 134 acres into trust as a tribal reservation, a move that would pave the way for such a project.

"The White Mountain Apache Tribe, the Tonto Apache Tribe, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation and the Yavapai-Apache Nation penned a letter detailing their opposition to The Republic Editorial Board, which will run in Sunday's Viewpoints section. The Gila River Indian Community publicly opposed the project last month.

"The letter says the tribes 'promised Arizona voters that casino gambling wouldn't encroach into Arizona cities and towns and would stay well away from neighborhoods, churches and schools. We have kept those promises.'

"Breaking those commitments, the tribes say, 'is not only bad for policy, it would result in economic injury to both the people of Arizona and Arizona tribes...'"
