Arizona tribe wants gaming committee

WINDOW ROCK, Arizona – As reported by the Farmington Daily Times: "Shiprock may be headed for a conflict with Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr.'s office over gaming.

"Things are going to start changing,' said Wallace Charley, former council delegate for Shiprock. 'As a nation, we have to take the risk to bring better things to the community.'

"For Charley, it's about more than a casino — developers, he said, are also willing to fund other economic development projects, such as an outlet mall in Shiprock.

"…This week, chapter delegates will ask the Navajo Nation Council for permission to form a gaming committee, one of many items on the agenda for the council's winter session in Window Rock, Ariz., held Monday through Friday.

"Last week, Shirley came out against individual gaming enterprises for any chapter, saying nation leadership should handle gaming on Navajo land…"
