Arizona Tribe Votes on Casino Height

ARIZONA – As reported by the East Valley Tribune: "Voters in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community will decide today whether to allow a 15-story hotel casino just east of its border with Scottsdale.

"About 4,800 of the tribe's more than 8,000 members are eligible to vote on a ballot question that would lift the community's building height restrictions to put taller and more dense development on the Salt River side of Loop 101.

"If the initiative passes, it would change the landscape of the community and the development could pose the first threat to Scottsdale's hospitality industry should a Las Vegas-style casino resort be built.

"Business leaders worry about the negative spinoffs of more buildings and people so close to city neighborhoods.

"…The casino would rise on Indian Bend Road east of Loop 101, where Casino Arizona at Talking Stick now is housed in tents. If successful, the vote also would allow 80-foot — or six-story — buildings along the freeway…"
