Arizona Tribe Battles Over Gambling

WINDOW ROCK, Arizona – As reported by the Navajo Time: "The battle lines are set this week with powerful forces on the Navajo Nation Council battling President Joe Shirley Jr. over gaming.

"Shirley fired the first shot in his message to the council Monday, saying he will oppose a resolution that would set up an agreement between the Navajo government and Hogback Chapter to share gaming revenue. The council is expected to debate the resolution this week.

"Ervin M. Keeswood Sr. (Hogback), head of the Government Services Committee, has submitted a proposal that basically would allow the Hogback Chapter to call the shots – and bear most of the cost – to build a casino.

"…If the council approves the Hogback proposal, not only would it violate tribal policy but also the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, according to administration officials…"
