Arizona community weighs casino options

WEST VALLEY, Arizona -- As reported by The Arizona Republic: "West Valley residents and community groups - like city leaders - are weighing plans for a casino an Arizona tribe wants to build in Glendale's sports and entertainment district.

"Some see benefits in jobs and visitors at a 600-room resort and casino. Others see pitfalls from 1.2 million annual visitors expected at a 24/7 casino.

"The proposed development at 91st and Northern avenues would be one more destination near the hockey arena, NFL stadium and Westgate City Center.

"The casino also would be near Peoria Unified School District's Raymond Kellis High School at 91st and Orangewood avenues and not too much further from the 800-home Rovey Farm Estates, which runs from 89th to 83rd avenues.

"'I don't think it should go in so close to a school. It's a bad influence,' said Sandy Hazzard, who lives just more than a mile from the proposed development..."
