Arizona Chapter Passes First Hurdle for Casino

WINDOW ROCK, Arizona – As reported by the Navajo Times: "Manuelito Chapter received its first 'do pass' on its proposed gaming act from the Navajo Nation Council's Public Safety Committee on Monday.

"Delegate Harriett K. Becenti (Manuelito/Rock Springs/Tsayatoh) sponsored the bill to enact the Manuelito Gaming Act.

"The proposed gaming act asks the council to authorize the Intergovernmental Relations Committee to amend the compact between the Navajo Nation and New Mexico to include Manuelito Chapter.

"The chapter wants to open a casino six miles west of Gallup along Interstate 40.

"…Becenti is also asking the council to approve amendments to the Navajo criminal code, to exempt Manuelito Chapter, like To'hajiilee Chapter, from prosecution for gambling activities…"
