Aretha Franklin to perform at Foxwoods next month15 November 2011MASHANTUCKET, Connecticut -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- The reigning Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin will bring her iconic hits to the MGM Grand at Foxwoods for a performance on December 30 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $50, $60, and $70 and go on sale October 21 at 11 a.m. Tickets may be purchased online at www.foxwoods.com, by calling the MGM Grand Box Office at 866-646-0609 or Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000, or in person at the MGM Grand Box Office. It is no surprise that everyone knows her name; she rewrote the history of jazz, blues, R&B and gospel music. At age 14, she recorded her first album, “Songs of Faith,” and at age 18, Franklin landed a contract with Columbia Records – the largest label in the world at the time. Franklin released her first single in September 1960 and it came in at No. 10 on Billboard’s R&B Singles Chart. Since Franklin has had 20 No. 1 singles on the Billboard’s R&B Singles Chart and 45 Top-40 hits on Billboard’s Hot 100. Franklin’s career drastically changed when she switched to Atlantic Records in 1967 and took soul to another level, starting with “I Never Loved a Man (the Way I Loved You),” she claimed ownership of the bestselling charts. Her “Respect” became a national anthem, a theme song for the civil rights movement and rally cries for all groups suffering neglect and discrimination. These hits along with "Chain of Fools," "Baby I Love You," "I Say a Little Prayer," "Think," "The House That Jack Built," to name a few earned her the title "Lady Soul," which she has worn uncontested ever since. Franklin has won a total of 18 Grammy Awards including 11 Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and held more inval uable honors than any musician to date. She led the nation in musical mourning at the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. She was the first woman inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on January 20, 1987. President Clinton awarded Franklin The National Medal of Arts in 1999. In 2004, she ranked in at No. 10 on Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and in 2008, she ranked in at No. 1 on Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. And in 2009 at the inauguration of President Barack Obama she performed “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee.” Foxwoods Resort Casino & MGM Grand at Foxwoods feature first-rate entertainment venues with upcoming events including: Foxwoods Resort Casino and MGM Grand at Foxwoods feature first-rate entertainment venues with upcoming events including: Diana: A Celebration (Now through January 15); Demi Lovato (November 18, MGM Grand Theater); Comix Presents Craig Robinson (November 19, Fox Theater); Comix Presents Eddie Griffin (November 26, Fox Theater); James Blunt (December 2, MGM Grand Theater); Jerry Seinfeld (December 9 & 10, MGM Grand Theater); Lisa Lampanelli (December 16); and Kenny Rogers (December 17, MGM Grand Theater). |
