Arcade's Video Games Aren't Slots, Jury Rules

BROWARD, Florida -- As reported by the Miami Herald: "To the relief of local arcade owners and their mostly senior-citizen clientele, a Broward jury Monday acquitted a Pompano Beach game room owner charged with running an illegal casino.

"After deliberating for four hours, a six-person jury found Gale Fontaine, owner of the Tropicana Rec Room, not guilty on two felony counts of possessing a slot machine and operating an illegal gambling house.

"A third charge of violating lottery laws was tossed out by Judge Michael Kaplan last week.

"Arcade owners statewide have been closely following the trial, which was one of the first court challenges to an adult arcade in the county and one of the first jury trials of an arcade operator in Florida.

"...Fontaine, who plans to reopen the Tropicana soon, said she took the case to trial because her customers needed her.

'My seniors were depending on me,' she said. 'I did the right thing for them.'..."
