Another gaming compact reviewed

SACRAMENTO, California -- As reported by the Desert Sun: "As the end of the California Legislature's session nears, the fifth Indian gaming compact that was part of the campaign that included the local Agua Caliente and Morongo tribes has been revived.

"The Legislature on Thursday renewed action on a new gambling agreement for the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, months after the compact had stalled.

"San Manuel was the only one of five tribes, including the Palm Springs-based Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, that failed to get its compact approved earlier this summer.

"...That side deal, known as a Memorandum of Agreement, addressed several issues including financial audits, workers' comp-ensation, enforcement of child support payments, and problem gambling.

"...That agreement was approved by the Senate on Thursday and was headed to the Assembly, where it was expected to be considered along with the compact itself possibly later today or in the next few days..."
