Analyst: Reno lagging behind gaming boom

RENO, Nevada -- As reported by the Reno Gazette-Journal: "The gaming industry is soaring worldwide, but not in Reno, a leading gaming analyst told a group of young Reno business leaders Wednesday.

"'This is an $85 billion industry (annually) but as of 1982 it was a $10 billion industry,'said Bill Eadington, director of the Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming at the University of Nevada.

"...'That's the good news,' Eadington told a class of the Leadership Reno/Sparks. 'The bad news is that Reno is not really part of this.'

"The growth in Las Vegas tourism and the proliferation of tribal gaming in Northern and Southern California has hurt the Reno market, Eadington said.

"The Reno-Sparks area saw a decline when California tribal gaming became big after 2000. before that, the Reno-Sparks area enjoyed a steady gaming revenue growth of about 3 percent annually..."
