An introduction to online blackjack

14 April 2010

Blackjack is one of the most popular casino games both online and offline. It's simple to play for people of all skill levels, and what's great about playing Blackjack online is that it's almost identical to playing in a brick and mortar casino. However, there is one small difference, and that's the fact that when playing online, some techniques that players often try, like card counting, don't apply, so it gives slightly better odds to the online casino than the brick and mortar casino over the player.

When playing Blackjack online, players almost always play directly against the dealer independently, with no other players at the table. In some cases, there are tables with up to 6 players, but when playing online this is rare. With online Blackjack, there are some varying rules that can apply to the game, and players can also choose from playing single deck or multi-deck variations at most casinos. Betting with online Blackjack does typically have set table minimums and maximums. In addition to the more traditional variations of online Blackjack, the game has become so popular that it has inspired forms of online solitaire and other games.

How to Play Online Blackjack

1. Online Blackjack, like Blackjack played at brick and mortar casinos, requires players to make a hand of 21 or closest to it without going over. They must also make a better hand than the dealer in order to win
2. Players make their wagers, using the betting option to adjust how much they would like to bet on their hand
3. Players are dealt 2 cards face up, while the dealer gets one face up and one face down
4. Based on their cards, players can choose to "Hit" and receive more cards in hopes of getting closer to 21 without going over, or they can "stick" (also referred to as "stand") and keep the cards that they have
5. Once the player is done playing their hand, the dealer turns over their face down card. If their hands is 16 or lower they must take at least one more card. If their hand is 17, they have to stand
6. Payouts are received depending on whether the player or the dealer ends up with the better hand

Online Blackjack Strategies

Players can try card counting with online Blackjack, though this is not as effective as it is in a brick and mortar casino. Other than that, players can work on their skills simply by learning the value of the cards, and practicing to get a feel for the right times to hit or stay in the game. With Blackjack, online or offline, an instinct can be established and this only comes in time!
