American Casino Operators Livid Over UK Government Retreat6 April 2005UK -- As reported by the Daily Telegraph: "American casino operators were livid last night over the Government's latest retreat on the Gambling Bill, which will limit a new class of mega-casinos to just one venue. "...Leading American casino groups have spent several years drawing up detailed plans for about 40 such venues, arguing they could create up to 100,000 jobs, regenerate local areas and see as much as £10billion of inward investment into the UK. "...Last night, one source close to a US operator said: 'It sucks. I can't believe the Government has simply caved in. We've gone from 40 casinos to eight to one.' "Tony Wollenberg, a leading gambling industry lawyer, said: "We have a Government which has no backbone, no intellectual ability to take on board sound, well-reasoned arguments. "...'This decision has cost the UK up to 100,000 jobs and £5 to £10billion of investment. We are a total laughing stock.'..." |
