Alternative California casino site considered

WASHINGTON, DC -- As reported by the Fresno Bee: "A top federal official is having second thoughts about plans for a large casino along Highway 99 near Madera and now wants to study an alternate site in North Fork -- which could delay the project by months, supporters say.

"Under orders from Washington, the Bureau of Indian Affairs' regional office in Sacramento has reluctantly agreed to study a 135-acre site known as the Old Mill in the foothills community.

"That's miles away from where the Mono Indians of the North Fork Rancheria want to build their Las Vegas-style casino.

"North Fork Rancheria tribal leaders and regional BIA officials both consider the Old Mill site a poor one, but Assistant Secretary of the Interior Carl Artman disagrees.

"...Sacramento-based BIA officials agreed to add the Old Mill site to a draft environmental impact statement now under review, but not without making their concerns known..."
