Najee
Saturday, 20 January
Best known as one of the pioneers of contemporary jazz, Najee started his musical career playing the clarinet, saxophone and flute in his hometown Jamaica, Queens, New York. After years of studying music in New York and Boston, Massaschusetts, Najee received his big break when he was asked to perform with the iconic R&B songstress Chaka Khan.

Najee debuted his first album, Najee's Theme, in 1986, which went Platinum and was later nominated for a Grammy Award in 1987. Najee followed his newfound success with his sophomore album Day by Day, which also went Platinum after its release. The jazz musician also released two certified-Gold albums, Tokyo Blue and Just An Illusion. The artist went on to release a total of three platinum and five gold albums throughout his career.

Najee has enjoyed major success in this career, receiving numerous awards, including the Soul Train Music Award for Best Jazz Artist and NAACP Image Awards. He has also brought his smooth jazz hits on tour all over the world and has performed for well-known leaders, including the former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela and U.S. President Bill Clinton.

The following year, the comedienne's fame skyrocketed after hosting Russell Simmons' "Def Comedy Jam" and "Showtime at the Apollo." That same year, she received the Richard Pryor Award for Comic of the Year.
