Alcohol, Gambling a Part of Rugby Life: Survey

AUSTRALIA -- As reported by ABC News: "A majority of Australian Super 12 players believe they have team-mates who are battling serious alcohol and gambling problems, according to a survey released by their players' asssociation today.

"The survey of 84 professional Australian rugby union players, including 27 Wallabies, found that just over half of those questioned thought that between one and 10 players in their state squad had a serious problem with alcohol.

"Fifty-seven per cent of those questioned believed that between one and 10 players had a serious gambling problem.

"The survey was conducted in January last year and has been published in the 2004 annual report of the Australian Rugby Union Players' Association (RUPA).

"...Australian Rugby Union spokesman Strath Gordon warned against reading too much into the survey, which he said revealed problems which were 'isolated' but not 'cultural' within the game...'
