Alberta Tribal Casino Dispute Goes to Court24 August 2005CALGARY – As reported by the Cochrane Times: "The bitter dispute over a casino development on aboriginal land west of the city may soon be played out in a Calgary courtroom. "On Friday afternoon, lawyers for the Stoney Nakoda First Nations served papers naming three of the band's elders and other unnamed parties as defendants. "The suit aims to get a court order barring the defendants, including Eliza Holloway, Alice Two-youngmen and Winnie Francis, from further interfering with the construction of a $27-million, 92-room hotel and casino complex. "The suit also seeks about $30,000 in damages after the sisters, along with eight other protesters forced the cancellation of the project's sod-turning ceremony July 28. "A lawyer for the women says they'd rather use traditional means to settle the dispute, but they'll fight the suit, which is set to begin Aug. 29 in Calgary Court of Queen's Bench…" |
