Alberta Casino Plans Proceed

ALBERTA – As reported by the Rocky Mountain Outlook: "A top Stoney administrator said the construction of a massive casino and hotel complex will go ahead despite the protests of locals who lay claim to the land.

"Su-Hin Chee, financial officer for the Stoney Nation, said that while last week's media-friendly sodturning event was cancelled after a sit-in by some of the reserve's elders, the Stoney administration intends to continue with the construction of the casino at the junction of the Trans- Canada Highway and the Hwy 40 South turnoff to Kananaskis.

"…Last Friday, a group of protesters, including two elderly sisters laying claim to the land, forced the cancellation of a promotional sod turning that was called after the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission gave its official rubber stamp to the project. The protesters, who set up a teepee on the grounds, said the plot of land designated for the project has been in their family for five generations and they rejected its use for a facility that would promote gambling on the reserve.

"…Casino protester and former Chiniki Councillor Gerald Powderface accused council members of corruption, claiming they were blackmailing residents living near the proposed casino site into supporting the project by threatening to take jobs away from them…"
